Born in 1956, critics have stated that Donald Baechler's work "places him in the painterly
tribe of Twombly, Ryman, Rauschenberg and Schwitters."
In the three lithographic prints he
created at Tandem Press, the foregrounds depict very flat cartoon-like heads of imaginary
people and birds. The backgrounds contain simulated coffee spills and circular stains
from cups or mugs which have stood in place for some time. Though the imagery sounds busy,
the minimal use of color endows it with a calmness, elegance and beauty.
Baechler has a
large international following and his work can be seen in museums throughout the world.
