Chicago artist John Himmelfarb is best known for his large-scale
black and white drawings, although he has worked in paint, clay, bronze,
and employed woodcut and lithography in his works on paper.
Complex and
narrative in subject, Himmelfarb's works combine representational and
abstract worlds within the framework of child-like perspective. At
mid-career, his art fills a generational gap between artists like
Alichinsky, Dubuffet, de Kooning, Kline and Pollock and younger
generation including Keith Haring, Basquiat and the German A.R. Penck.
