Tom Loeser

2D or Not 2D?
Nationally renowned furniture maker Tom Loeser created his first prints at Tandem Press. He creates one of a kind functional furniture and draws his inspiration from historical sources. Surface texture and color is integral to his work. In his furniture he uses carving and hand-applied paint to achieve the desired surface. In the prints this use of pastel colors also enhances the three dimensionality of the work. In addition, the prints can be assembled to turn into a paper cabinet which resembles one of furniture pieces.

According to Lloyd Herman, "Color has been a hallmark of Thomas Loeser's style since, just out of school in 1982, he burst on the scene with his ingenious Folding Chair (1982). Identifying the Folding Chair as an icon of the decade in my book, Art That Works, I saw it as a reinterpretation of the classic design of Dutch artist Gerrit Reitveld. Loeser had constructed a chair from rectangular pieces of wood and colorfully painted them, evoking something of the essence of a Mondrian painting in three dimensions. In fact, Loeser's use of color seemed almost to provide his work with a fourth dimension."
