Bruce Crownover
Master Printer/Shop Manager

As a boy, Bruce Crownover's creative talent was introduced to the world with his first place win in a sandcastle building contest on a beach near his home in Southern California. After a short-lived career in technical illustration for Aerospace (1981), his love for drawing and clay modeling pulled him back toward the study of fine art. After testing the art departments (and waters) of four universities, it was Utah State University's printmaker Moishe Smith who enabled Crownover to achieve a BFA in 1985. Again, after crossing the country, he chose to continue the study of printmaking at the UW-Madison. Fortuitously, his introduction to graduate school coincided with the creation of Tandem Press. Beginning as a volunteer, by the time he had graduated (MFA 1989), Crownover was on his way to a career as a professional printmaker, achieving a full time position as Tandem Press's Associate Printer in 1995. In the late 80's, while at Tandem, he collaborated with a Japanese artist, who had come to make prints. This led to Crownover's brief hiatus in Boston and New York City as Ukiyo-e woodcarver (1990-91). At present, he also paints at his studio on Madison's East Side and occasionally exhibits his work. With the little time he has left, he spends it traveling with his new wife, Samantha, or at home in their historic apartment overlooking the lake.
