Louisa Chase juxtaposes static geometric figures with gestural
studies of those figures in the three prints she created at Tandem Press.
The opaque geometric forms float among the havoc of the background strokes.
Critic Ann Lauterbach states "there is an increased and heightened sense of
layering and a desire to bring the separate languages of geometry and drawing,
of transparency, opacity and gesture, into alignment without sacrificing their
several clarities. The activity of the figure is depicted in a stunning
elaboration of terms: a small, doll-like, and opaque figure placed in front
of a larger, transparent figure, sometimes an exact replica -like a shadow or
echo- and then a third element itself multi-layered and diverse, of drawing."
