Sculptor, puppeteer and printmaker, Eric Hagstrom's work is often
a satirical and humorous commentary on the excesses of contemporary society.
His work confronts day- to- day political actions straight on while his
incredible technical versatility transports the viewer to another level.
Based in Madison, Hagstrom has participated in numerous solo and group
exhibitions throughout the United States. Critics have stated of his
work: "His style bristles before our eyes. His contours swoop in staccato
rhythms and curling contractions that converge in incisively detailed
scenes that can amuse, vex and horrify. He also trades in political
and social satire dating back to Bosch, Daumier and Grandville, but
in a more expressionistic, personalized mode. He is fascinated with
the demeanor and behaviour of animals. Hagstrom instills his creatures
with more vibrance and sentience than most urban humans might allow them.
But the artist always retains the animals' wild character, rather than
saddling them with the cutsey 'humanizing' typical of cartooning."
