Since receiving degrees in art at the University of California-Davis in the
late 1960's, Frank Owen has established a career as a painter and has taught
widely. Owen's canvases and works on paper form carefully constructed
compositions rich in both color and texture.
According to John Fitz
Gibbon, Frank Owen's paintings are "about ethics, physics, the
mathematics and metaphysics of space-time; they're about truth and
friendship, and according to some people, even generosity; anger is
in them too, and terribilita; they invoke the heroic guise of abstract
expressionism, especially Pollock's; they're also about Duchamp-about
a lot of other art too, including forays into the Quattrocento; they're
about escaping your teachers and getting a bearing on yourself; they're
about talent, having what it takes with your mitts, and through their
hand-made quality they make a social statement about the grace in an
all-tool using labor; they're about computers and all kinds of technologies,
new and ancient; they're about consciousness and mind, and above all about,
about information they're the most archival paintings I know; they're about
playing contradictions against each other to achieve a balance of apparent
opposites."
