There are many characteristics to Harriet Shorr's work that are
immensely appealing to viewers and critics alike: the monumental size of
her paintings, their lush color and aerial viewpoint, the narrative
tantalizingly suggested by the objects that form her subjects.
She
is a realist who paints still-lifes with the sensibility of an abstract
color field painter. In the use of her paint, Shorr is indebted to the
Abstract Expressionists. In a catalogue of her work George Tomko stated:
"Like Fairfield Porter and Milton Avery, Shorr is a virtuoso colorist.
She shares with them the extraodinary ability to keep every element in
the picture fresh, vivid, and alive."
